Arbitrator Rules Against City Of Austin In Firefighter Exam Dispute

AUSTIN, TX &#8211 An arbitrator has ruled that the City of Austin cannot change the way it scores firefighter entrance exams from a point-based method to pass/fail. The city had hoped the pass/fail scoring system would help it diversify the fire department but was challenged by the firefighters union.

Siding with the union, the arbitrator said in his ruling that “the city shall cease and desist from implementing or utilizing any hiring process that does not rank applicants in numerical order as required.”

The city is seeking to hire about 100 firefighters, but it had not yet calculated final scores for most applicants.
