In order to combat a rising murder rate that is on pace to be its highest in a decade, the city of Detroit is instituting a policy to place desk officers on patrol called Operation Inside Out: Night Angels. This new policy will require most desk officers to put in eight hours of patrol time each week. Police Chief Ralph Godbee says this will result in 40 to 50 more officers on the street each shift.
“We’re going to saturate targeted problem areas, so we can have a strong police presence around these places: liquor stores, gas stations and other high-crime areas,” Godbee said.
Detroit’s rising crime rate comes at a time when the Detroit PD is losing officers. The department has lost nearly 100 officers in the past year and almost 1,300 in the past decade.
