Cleveland Firefighters Union protests city’s new work rules

CLEVELAND, OH &#8211 The Cleveland Firefighters Union is protesting new work rules calling for doctor’s notes from firefighters calling in sick on upcoming holidays.

This comes in response to an unusually high number of firefighters calling in sick on Thanksgiving Day.

The city first said 28 firefighters called in sick on Thanksgiving, now 31. The city said it had to close two fire companies and downsize a third.

As a result, City Hall said it would need a doctor’s note or other proof of emergency for any firefighter taking off Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

The union has filed a grievance asking the city to take back the new rules.
