SANFORD, FL – Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte announced his choice of who will serve as the city’s interim police chief amid the Trayvon Martin investigation.
Capt. Darren Scott will take that position. He spoke briefly to reporters, but would not comment directly about the case.
Last week, Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee announced he would step aside during the investigation into the unarmed 17-year-old’s shooting death.
A volunteer neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman, claimed he shot the boy in self-defense inside a gated community in Sanford.
Lee said that he will only be stepping down temporarily in hopes to restore calm within the community. He said information about the case would not be released, but on Monday, a newspaper article reported on explosive claims made by unnamed authorities about Zimmerman’s account of the shooting.
Scott would not comment on the report.
