SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman says officials plan to review a policy that prohibits fire fighters from recording emergency scenes without advance approval from the city’s fire chief.
The decision comes just days after a local newspaper printed images from a video that shows a fire truck running over one of the victims of the July 6 Asiana Airlines crash. A battalion chief shot the footage with a camera he attached to his helmet.
Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge told reporters on Monday that the battalion chief’s actions violated a 2009 prohibition on unauthorized recordings.
But she says that in recognition of the valuable information the video provided, the department would revisit the issue and possibly update the policy. Talmadge says there is no timeline for completing the review.
