PITTSBURGH, PA – The union representing Pittsburgh police officers on Thursday appealed an Allegheny County judge’s decision that the city does not have to pay on-duty police officers the same rate as off-duty officers when working side-by-side at special events.
Common Pleas Judge Robert Colville on March 11 reversed arbitrator Philip W. Parkinson decision siding with the Fraternal Order of Police Fort Pitt Lodge No. 1 regarding the wage disparity. Off-duty officers are paid $42.12 an hour for special events like Penguins and Steelers games. That rate can be as much as $20 an hour more than the officer’s regular rate.
The city contended Parkinson did not have jurisdiction to decide the case, and said city officials have a right to assign on-duty officers anywhere they want, including at special events where off-duty officers are already stationed. The two sides will argue their case before Commonwealth Court judges at a hearing not yet scheduled.
