FORT WAYNE, IN – The Fort Wayne City Council has voted to end collective bargaining for all city employees except police officers and firefighters.
The council members voted 6-3 along party lines Tuesday night to approve the Republican-sponsored proposal, giving them enough votes to override a promised veto from Democratic Mayor Tom Henry.
The council tabled a proposal to end union negotiations with police officers and firefighters. The Journal Gazette and the News-Sentinel report Republican Councilman Tom Didier said he looked at those jobs differently, which brought jeers from union supporters in the audience.
Republican Councilman John Crawford says the city employee unions increase costs and inefficiencies.
City firefighters union president Jeremy Bush said he was disgusted by the council’s action and that he was ashamed to call himself a Republican.
