CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Seeing the need for further discussion, City Council opted to hold off on an emergency request from Mayor Kahlil Seren to remove the police and fire chiefs from the list of classified employees. Doing so would open up job searches for those positions to external candidates.
Under Seren’s proposal, accompanying civil service employee protections — for the assistant chiefs as well — would also be eliminated. This led to concerns being voiced by both chiefs at the July 7 special council meeting, called during the month-long summer recess.
