Local Fire Departments Face Serious Applicant Drought

UTICA, N.Y. — It was a different world when Utica Fire Department Captain Joseph Puleo took the firefighter exam 21 years ago.

“When I took the exam, we had 270 people taking the exam and it was multiple rooms and we had to take it at MVCC because we needed such a big facility. And those days are kind of gone,” says Puleo.

As of last week, frighteningly few had signed up online to take the firefighter civil service exam Jan. 13.
