Terre Haute Fire Department Struggles With Workforce Shortages, Costing Thousands In Overtime Pay

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – This year, the Terre Haute Fire Department is asking the city for $579,000 in overtime pay. Chief Bill Berry says it’s nothing new.

With a number of firefighters being on workman’s comp and retiring this year, others have been working a lot of overtime to keep up.

In letter to the city, Chief Berry says in order to keep the community safe, as well as our firefighters, minimum staffing is required. That looks like having 36 firefighters to be on duty.
