D.C. Leaders Say New Contract Will Help Recruit, Retain Police

A new contract overwhelmingly ratified by rank-and-file D.C. police officers would raise salaries and make them more competitive with other agencies around the country competing to fill law enforcement jobs, city and union leaders said Thursday.

All but 21 of 1,341 members who voted in Wednesday night’s referendum approved the city’s offer of a 10 percent raise spread over three years, said the union’s chairman, describing turnout as high compared with past votes. The union represents about 3,300 police officers, detectives and sergeants.
