jacksonville sheriff’s office layoffs to be announced in lottery

JACKSONVILLE, FL &#8211 Twenty-eight will not be a lucky number for deputies with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department. The Department must lay off deputies because of recent budget cuts and will use a lottery to determine which deputies will have to go. According to Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt, a class of 28 deputies will be ranked from 1 to 28, and those with the highest numbers will be the first to lose their jobs.

Because police officers come in as a class, none of them technically have seniority over each other, although deputies with military experience will be given preference over other deputies.

Senterfitt did not say which class of officers is affected, but did say it is not the most recent class.
