Georgia County Considering Using Inmates As Firefighters

CAMDEN COUNTY, GA &#8211 In an effort to improve its ISO rating, Camden County, Georgia may start using inmates to fight fires. The inmate option is one of several being considered and is the least expensive. The Florida Times-Union reports that the county may save up $500,000 by some estimates.

According to the newspaper report:

The Camden program would put two inmates in each of three existing firehouses, and they would respond to all emergencies – including residential – alongside traditional firefighters. The inmates would have no guard, but would be monitored by a surveillance system and by the traditional firefighters, who would undergo training to guard the inmates.
